to the Colony as was hoped.

Before making any offer of

this nature I should like to have the opinion in the matter

of Dr. Atkinson, Principal Civil Medical Officer, now on

leave in England, and should be much obliged if Your Lord-

ship would be good enough to obtain this opinion for me.

Dr. Atkinson is fully conversant with the

work done by Mr. Hunter as evidenced in the Annual Reports

of the Goverment Bacteriologist for the years 1902 to

1905, in his Research into Epidemic and Epizootic Plague

published as Sessional Paper No.41 of 1904, and in the

Research into the Etiology of Beri-Beri carried out by him

in conjunction with Dr. W. V. M. Koch, of which the rem

sults were published as Sessional Paper No.11 of 1906.

4.

It is my duty in connection with the ques-

tion of Mr. Hunter being given a permanent appointment to

call attention to my Confidential despatch of the 10th.

31898 August, 1904, reporting this gentleman for having been in

a state of intoxication. I am glad to say no repetition of

this offence has come to my notice.

5.

I would also mention that I have not lost

sight of Mr. Chamberlain's Confidential despatch of the 6th

December, 1901, which covers a recommendation by Sir

Patrick Manson that Mr. Hunter should be again medically

examided
