Before making any offer of
this nature I should like to have the opinion in the matter
of Dr. Atkinson, Principal Civil Medical Officer, now on
leave in England, and should be much obliged if Your Lord-
ship would be good enough to obtain this opinion for me.
Dr. Atkinson is fully conversant with the
work done by Mr. Hunter as evidenced in the Annual Reports
of the Goverment Bacteriologist for the years 1902 to
1905, in his Research into Epidemic and Epizootic Plague
published as Sessional Paper No.41 of 1904, and in the
Research into the Etiology of Beri-Beri carried out by him
in conjunction with Dr. W. V. M. Koch, of which the rem
sults were published as Sessional Paper No.11 of 1906.

It is my duty in connection with the ques-
tion of Mr. Hunter being given a permanent appointment to
call attention to my Confidential despatch of the 10th.
31898 August, 1904, reporting this gentleman for having been in
a state of intoxication. I am glad to say no repetition of
this offence has come to my notice.

I would also mention that I have not lost
sight of Mr. Chamberlain's Confidential despatch of the 6th

Patrick Manson that Mr. Hunter should be again medically
examided
